Patrick Page Plays The Mad King
Kevin Spacey may be beginning his reign at BAM tonight as Richard III, but another crazy king was entertaining audiences last night in New York City. I’m talking about Pirandello’s “Henry IV,” brought to life in a reading from the Red Bull Theater company. A starry company — Jennifer Ehle, Victor Garber — brought to life Tom Stoppard’s English-language version of a comedy/drama written in 1922. Patrick Page (pictured), currently playing the villain in Broadway’s “Spiderman” musical, played Pirandello’s mad king, and he made the most of it. (Did I mention that I was there?) The play would need a cast at least as starry as this one to have a chance on Broadway. But why not?
