Olympics Will Destroy Theatre
When the 2012 Olympics were awarded to London instead of New York, many New Yorkers secretly cheered. Who wanted more crowds than usual on our streets? There’s a new group that should rejoice that we weren’t blessed by the monumentally corrupt Olympic selection committee: the theatre community. Andrew Lloyd Webber (pictured), in a new interview, says that the West End — London’s equivalent to Broadway — will be absolutely decimated this summer by the games and the run-up to them. He says that advance bookings are only 10 percent of their normal rate for the summer. So theatre lovers who want a summer play holiday should come to New York not London.
