“Tattoo” Soundtrack: Very Trenty
Perhaps my favorite element of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” movie is the soundtrack, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. First of all, anything created by anyone named after a character in my all-time favorite American novel has got my immediate attention. And I’m a Nine Inch Nails fan — you know, Reznor’s band — ever since my bosom buddy J. B. Ghuman, Jr. insisted that I listen to that rock group or risk his Zeus-ian wrath. Reznor and Ross’s work isn’t about compiling pumped-up songs for a pre-fab CD. It’s about creating a soundscape. As you’ll immediate note from listening to the video sampler above, the result is as if “Tubular Bells” went to hell and came back staggering on a mash of Quaaludes and coke. The effect is brilliantly eerie. There is one musical bit in the movie, though, for which Reznor and Ross can’t claim credit. All I’ll say is that it involves Enya, and the idea to use the Celtic songstress came from the movie’s star, Daniel Craig, and a scroll down his iPod.
