Is Rooney Mara In The Race Now?
The Oscar race, I mean, for her performance as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” New Yorker critic David Denby certainly thinks so. In his new review, he says that Mara basically owns the film. If this praise continues, then Mara will slip in to the very competitive fifth slot for Best Actress (the “locks” appear to be Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Michelle Williams, and Glenn Close, though I’m worried about Close getting bumped aside, maybe by Tilda Swinton). By the way, “Dragon”‘s producer, Scott Rudin, has now banned Denby from future press screenings, because he broke a promise that he would not review the movie until next week, with the rest of the critical corps. I’m with Rudin on this one. The New Yorker’s defense — that it has a lot of movies to review from now through its holiday double issue — is flimsy. We live in an online world, and reviews can be posted whenever. They don’t all also have to appear in print.
