Your Weekend: LW Recommends
Movies: “Hugo” is getting some critical kudos. I’ve seen it and concur that it is highly beautiful and imaginative, if a little long. As for this weekend’s releases, Ralph Fiennes’ production of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” is impressive. Television: Steve Buscemi hosts “SNL,” with The Black Keys performing. On Sunday, Buscemi’s HBO show, “Boardwalk Empire,” has an episode called “Under God’s Power She Flourishes.” Music: Christmas keeps dominating the CD charts, but Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” is getting me out of bed in the morning. Books: I’ve read 5 of the New York Times’ list of the 10 Best Books of 2011, and can especially recommend Chad Harbach’s debut novel “The Art of Fielding” and Manning Marable’s biography of Malcolm X. Sports: Are you juiced by the news that the NBA will start playing on Christmas Day? Me, neither. I’m sticking with football. This weekend, especially: Detroit vs. New Orleans. If you don’t like Drew Brees you need a heart transplant. Finally: Let’s hope the latest news about jobs portends good things for 2011.
