Miss Ethel: Yesterday’s Kardashian
In the wake of the Kim Kardashian debacle, the media have been running stories about even shorter marriages in show-biz history. One of them was between Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine, which lasted a mere 38 days. Michael Riedel of the New York Post has looked through some of Ethel’s papers and shared a few tidbits. Two pages about “Gypsy,” in which Merman starred, include her jotting down advice from director Jerry Robbins: ““Come forward. Right hand up! Left hand up! Take off jacket. Grind proscenium.†Grind proscenium? Love it!
