“Godspell” Opens On B’way: Reviews
Critics are being mighty tough on the revival of “Godspell,” which has just opened on Broadway. At the risk of losing most of my friends, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The cast is extraordinarily versatile and hard-working, Daniel Goldstein‘s direction is inventive, Christopher Gattelli’s choreography performs miracles on a relatively small playing area, and David Korins‘ set springs surprise after surprise. My only complaint: the musical arrangements. Virtually every song moves into group harmony instead of letting each cast member have a legitimate solo or half-solo. And the simple melodies are much too amped-up to evoke pure emotional response in the audience. Otherwise: great fun.
