Hollywood Awards: Viola Davis Shines
It’s not even November, but the Oscar-campaign season is already underway. Last night, the Hollywood Film Awards ceremony — the first awards of the season — took place. Many of the people that LW’s Oscar prognosticator Rex Okpodu and I have been telling you for weeks are among the frontrunners — George Clooney, Viola Davis, Glenn Close, Christopher Plummer — won awards. According to this blogger, Davis gave the best speech. The categories were a bit confusing: there was a best supporting actor award (Plummer) but not a best supporting actress award. And Davis won as part of “The Help” ensemble, not an award of her own. So it would be a bit foolhardy to use the awards as strict Oscar precursors. Still, it’s nice to know that my favorite performance of the year — Davis, of course — made an impression. (She always does; it helps, when you’re giving a speech, to have all that theatre training.)
