Your Weekend: LW Recommends
Movies: Forget “Footloose.” (Trust me, I’ve seen it.) The art-house crowd will swarm to Almodovar’s latest, “The Skin I Live In,” which marks the director’s reunion with Antonio Banderas. Television: PBS highlights include the Guthrie’s “HMS Pinafore” on Friday and Mystery’s “Case Histories” on Sunday. TCM has an Italian Neorealist festival on Saturday, including the peerless “The Bicycle Thief.” Music: The religious-minded among you should consider Michael Buble’s new Christmas CD. A great put-the-top-down single is Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s “Young, Wild & Free.” Books: Alan Hollinghurst is one of the few fiction writers whose every novel I would race to read, but I generally agree with James Wood’s highly respectful but disappointed assessment of Hollinghurst’s latest, “The Stranger’s Child.” Sports: I wouldn’t be so New York-centric as to say that a real World Series must have the Yankees in it, but I will say that I prefer World Series with an East or West Coast team. No chance this year. I’ll be following the Rugby World Cup semifinals this weekend. Go Wales! Finally: It’s peak foliage time in New England. Enjoy!
