“J. Edgar” Not About “2 Gay Guys”
Leonardo DiCaprio, star of the upcoming “J. Edgar” movie, and Clint Eastwood, director of said film, have given an interview to GQ about the project. DiCaprio is measured on the subject of J. Edgar Hoover’s sexuality: “”If I were a betting man, I actually don’t know what I would bet [regarding his sexuality].” But Eastwood, eager perhaps not to have his work pigeonholed, sputters: “”It’s not a movie about two gay guys. It’s a movie about how this guy manipulated everybody around him and managed to stay on through nine presidents. I mean, I don’t give a crap if he was gay or not.” What makes me worry about the quality of the movie, which premieres at the AFI fest on November 3, is that Eastwood’s track record with “gay/not gay” material isn’t so hot. “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” may be the worst thing he’s directed in a long, extraordinary career. I worry that “J. Edgar” may be similarly misguided.
