Whitney: “Sparkle” To Shine Again
It looks as if Whitney Houston (left) may finally get her wish to star in a remake of the 1976 movie “Sparkle.” She’ll play the mother — Mary Alice in the original — to the title character played by “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks (center). (Sparks, Sparkle: get it?) Omar Epps, who is lately making a Jamie Foxx transition from comedy to drama, will play Sparkle’s druggie brother-in-law. The original movie, starring Irene Cara and Lonette McKee, has a gritty shine. Its songs, written by Curtis Mayfield, were recorded, spectacularly, by Aretha Franklin. The best known is “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” which was much later a hit for En Vogue.
