This Guy Uses “Faggot” 213 Times
One thing I neglected to mention in my posting yesterday about the pointless obscenity of Sunday’s VMAs on MTV is the awarding of Best New Artist to Tyler, the Creator (pictured). His hip-hop album, “Goblin,” uses the word “faggot” 213 times in its lyrics. This isn’t a matter of free speech. This is a matter of mindlessness. I could understand if a song, for purposes of parody or enlightenment, used the word “faggot” a few times and we could all easily grasp the context. (Tyler claims his use of the word is “ironic.” Oh, sure.) But when a rapper uses the word 213 times we are well past the point of dramatic effect and into the realm of offensive garbage. I generally don’t like to compare matters of racism to matters of homophobia or sexism (Tyler’s CD is also highly sexist in its use of “bitch”) because each has a different history. But if any non-African-American popular artist used the N-word 213 times on a CD, he or she would be drummed out of the business. And rightly so!
You just read the GLAAD thing right? Did you actually look at the lyrics for that album. At my count he uses faggot fifteen times.
