Wodehouse: Not A Nazi Collaborator?
Newly released British intelligence files confirm that PG Wodehouse (pictured) — author of my all-time-favorite comic novels, about Jeeves, as well as of the original book for “Anything Goes” — was a dupe not a collaborator when he made a series of wartime broadcasts in 1941 during his detention by the Nazis. According to the Telegraph: ‘The broadcasts – to be beamed to America, not yet at war with Germany – were couched in humorous terms that might have made some German propagandist think them more favourable to the Nazi cause than they were.’ The comments section to the article makes the intelligence-file revelation much more nuanced than a simple exoneration of Wodehouse.
