No, the new project “Effie” is not a sitcom spinoff about the Jennifer Hudson character in “Dreamgirls.” It’s an Emma Thompson-scripted movie about the unfortunate marriage between Euphemia “Effie” Gray and critic John Ruskin in 1850s London. (According to one version, when Ruskin espied his young wife’s pubic hair for the first time he was so revolted that the union was never consummated.) Dakota Fanning (pictured) will play Euphemia, and the rest of the cast is starry. Plenty of other plays and movies have tried to get the story of this marriage off the ground; Emma won.
