Sondheim Stirs Up “Porgy” Debate
It’s just what the dog days of summer needed: Stephen Sondheim to stir things up. Sondheim wrote a blistering letter to the New York Times, in response to the paper’s recent article about the changes being made to “Porgy and Bess” for the Diane Paulus-directed version of the opera about to open in Cambridge before moving to Broadway. (Pictured are Paulus directing Phillip Boykin and Audra McDonald.) You can read the letter here, as well as the torrent of comments the letter has gotten on the NY Times website. Other responses can be found here.
