New Harmony Theatre: Musical Gem

I am spending a few days in New Harmony, Indiana, one of the most historically rich little towns in the United States. I will be posting items this week about that history, especially as it relates to architecture. Today, however, I want to focus on New Harmony Theatre, which is rounding off its annual summer season with a fine production of the doo-wop musical “Avenue X.” I didn’t see the show when it premiered off-Broadway in the mid-1990s, and was happy to make its acquaintance. Centered around a culture clash between Italian-Americans and African-Americans in 1962 Brooklyn, the songs are evocative, tuneful, and splendidly sung by an eight-person ensemble. I wish you could have been there with me!
