The 50 Best Summer Reads
I’ve never quite understood the idea of “summer reading.” Why would I choose a book differently in the summer than in any other time of year? For me, it’s always a matter of mood and availability. (Kinda like sex in that regard.) Maybe I’d grasp “summer reading” better if I were more of a beach person. But even when I was a beach person I was just as likely to read something challenging as something trashy. Keep such thoughts in mind when perusing this list of estival recommendations. The volume that most cries out to me is “Drury Lane to Dimapur,” described thusly: “As a young actress in 1942, Doreen Hawkins was part of a troupe dispatched to India and Burma. Her account of performing Noel Coward in the jungle is irresistible.” I’m there.
