James Franco’s Big “Arty Piece”
James Franco, whose unending desire to be the ultimate hipster multi-hyphenate commands my respect if often not my affection, has made a film about poet Hart Crane. Called “The Broken Tower,” it is playing at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Highly reliable critic Todd McCarthy is not impressed: “James Franco’s arty piece about maverick poet Hart Crane may serve better as his thesis film than as a commercial release.” Watch an interview with Franco and Paul Mariani, his collaborator on the project, here.
