Weiner: More American Puritanism
Let’s admit that Congressman Anthony Weiner has been less than forthcoming about a certain social-media’d photo. Otherwise, apart from the predictable sniggering about his name, who gives a fig? The only one this concerns at all is his wife. And, even there, what the hell did he — a man who would like to be mayor of New York — do that was so exciting? As far as we know, he didn’t have sex with anyone, and the photo itself is “scandalous” only to someone with a 10-year-old’s mentality who hasn’t check out any Internet hook-up sites lately. The whole media circus over Weiner is almost as ridiculous as that of Congressman Chris Lee resigning his seat because he dared (gasp!) to Blackberry a shirtless photo of himself to a woman he saw on Craigslist. He didn’t even have an affair with her. As with Weiner, that was a matter between Lee and his wife. It was not the kind of gross hypocrisy (of, say, a closeted politician voting for anti-gay legislation) that requires stepping down.
