Will I Ever Love Lang Lang?
Yeah, yeah, the technique of Chinese pianist Lang Lang is wow-y: he can execute rapid figuration and double octaves with ease, and he zooms his way around the keyboard with the irritating ease of Jimmie Johnson in his latest souped-up jalopy. But when I listen to Lang Lang, I rarely feel something I never felt before: not because he conforms to the foul stereotype about Asian musicians as “soul-less” but because he never seems to stop long enough on an emotion for me to want to stop, too. Here’s Lang Lang talking about such criticisms in a new interview.
