Is Don Lemon About To Come Out?
Today, the New York Post published the following blind item: “Which prominent TV personality is about to come out with the help of public relations guru Howard Bragman, who has helped dozens of celebs announce their sexuality? The media blitz will begin next week.” The guessing game, however, is in full swing today online, in forums such as Michael Musto’s blog in the Village Voice. Leading candidates are “Good Morning America” weather guy Sam Champion and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, both of whom live open lives in New York but who have never officially come out to an interviewer. My guess is Don Lemon, a CNN journalist and anchor whom I have long admired, and not just because we share a last name. Why Don? For one thing, the excellent Mr. Bragman is very adept at repping black men dealing with gay issues, whether John Amaechi, the ex-NBA player who came out, or Isaiah Washington, the actor accused of making homophobic comments. For another thing, Lemon has book about to come out. It is called “Transparent,” and it promises “painful revelations.” These could relate to the childhood abuse that Lemon said last year that he suffered as a child. As for the million-dollar question: Am I certain that Don Lemon is gay? No. But I wish him and his book well, whatever it promises.
