Canada: $$$ Power, But No Culture
A new book by a UCLA geography professor says that the near-future belongs to Canada: global climate change and a ceaseless need for oil, plus a shortage of water in the world, will make our northern neighbor a formidable economic power. Unfortunately, as Toronto columnist John Doyle points out, economic clout doesn’t mean that Canada is about to produce mass culture of any popularity. He writes: ‘We like our hockey, royal weddings, and bland [i.e. reality-show] U.S.-centric entertainment.’ In other words, a lot of cosy crap, just like their American cousins. (With the exception of hockey!)
