Rachmaninov Tops Film-Music Poll
I often walk past the Upper West Side apartment building where composer Sergei Rachmaninov lived out his life. Sometimes, as I walk past, I whistle themes from his Piano Concerto No. 2 — the model of melodic bombast. I’m not surprised that this music has just topped a poll for favorite piece of film music: it’s used in the classic picture, “Brief Encounter, starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.”
