Opera Has Huge Floating Head

The Austrian music festival in Bregenz, on Lake Constance, will present Giordano’s operatic masterpiece “Andrea Chénier” beginning July 20, 2011. (The opera contains the aria “La Mamma Morta,” sung by Callas, that was used in the movie “Philadelphia.”) The floating stage will recreate the French Revolution and the story of executed poet Chénier. The new stage will cost approximately $10.4 million and will feature a 24-meter-high Marat sculpture, which is the figure from “The Death of Marat,” a 1793 painting by Jacques-Louis David. As you can see, the sculpture is already taking shape.
