Sally Field Too Old For Mrs. Lincoln
It was announced yesterday that Sally Field (left) will play Mary Todd Lincoln (center), the wife of the nation’s 16th President, in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” which begins filming next fall for release in late ’12. The Oscar-winning Field obviously resembles the former First Lady but Field is 11 years old than Daniel Day Lewis, who will play Lincoln. Mrs. Lincoln was a decade younger than her husband. I’d like to say that Spielberg has struck a blow for senior actresses, but the plain fact is that Field is too old to play the part of the script, by Tony Kushner, that involves Mary when her husband is still alive. Better casting for Mary would have been Marcia Gay Harden (below).
