“Game Of Thrones” Tops “Sopranos”

I suppose I should care about today’s big news story — that Katie Couric will return to the “Today” show — but I was more struck by this story about HBO. Everybody thinks that HBO has been ailing since the heyday of “The Sopranos” and “Sex and the City” and that the cable network would never match those series in popularity. Well, guess what? HBO’s new series, the fantasy-action “Game of Thrones,” has not only become its best-selling series abroad, but is fetching prices higher than those of “The Sopranos.” HBO’s parent, Time Warner, keeps rolling up the profits, a fact to which I can attest given the steep increases in my household’s Time Warner cable bill lately.
