Gays Turning Against Lady Gaga?

bernstein-gaga-rant_014019734041A political activist friend of mine, who’d been on the barricades in the 1970s and 1980s and then watched, horrified, as his activists friends all became uber-materialists (country houses, Mercedes SUVs) in the 1990s, used to joke that frivolous gay men were divided into the “fussies” and the “sniffies.” Well, according to a context-illuminating story by Jacob Bernstein about Lady Gaga’s incontrovertibly mega single, “Born This Way,” the fussies and sniffies are starting to turn against the performer. Some of them think she’s a little behind the curve with her latest effort. Others of them thought her egg-vessel act at the Grammys was cracked — and not in a good way. Such detractors are the price of fame, and, if Madonna (or Liza or Judy) are any guide, then the same guys who fuss and sniff today about Gaga will be breaking down doors trying to score tickets to her concert tomorrow. (Personally, I’d rather see Slayer.) Meanwhile, Miss G is reaching kids with necessary messages. And who cares if the music isn’t Mozart. It has a beat and you can dance to it.
