What BAFTAs Mean For Oscars
Here’s what LW Oscar prognosticator Rex Okpodu and I think that tonight’s BAFTA awards mean in terms of the Oscar race for major awards: “The King’s Speech” is on a roll to win Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Colin Firth), and very likely either Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush) or Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter). The same film rarely takes both supporting Oscars, which means that Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, of “The Fighter,” who have been winning most of the run-up awards, probably won’t repeat their trick on Oscar night. (To be fair, Leo wasn’t nominated for BAFTA.) David Fincher (“The Social Network”) won BAFTA for Best Director so he is back, slightly, in the lead to win Best Director Oscar. As for the Best Actress chances of Annette Bening, to slightly amend what the wonderful Texas governor Ann Richards said about George H. W. Bush at the end of his 1992 campaign against Bill Clinton: “Stick a fork in her, she’s done.”
