Murch: Why 3-D Doesn’t Work

murch51QMC9B04SL._SS500_Walter Murch, known as the movies’ most esteemed film editor and sound designer and, to a few of us, as the subject of a book by Michael Ondaatje in which we learn of Murch’s love of the Italian writer Curzio Malaparte, has written a letter to critic Roger Ebert. In it, Murch explains why 3-D technology is problematic. Apparently, the biggest problem is something called “the convergence/focus issue.”
