King’s Attitude About Jews: Backlash?
For some curious reason a few British newspapers have recently revisited an eight-year-old story about an indifference to the plight of European Jewry in the late ’30s and early ’40s on the part of King George VI, who is portrayed by Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech.” The monarch’s indifference was horrible, but so was that of Churchill and FDR. If either of them was the subject of a well-made movie, would some journalists be trying to puncture that picture’s Oscar chances by dredging up old news about their lack of action in wartime?
