Jon Stewart: Sarcasm Has Limits
Jon Stewart struggled big time to do his show last night in the wake of the Arizona shootings. He said: “The more this show deals with current events, the harder it becomes when reality is sad.” Unlike the rest of the TV chat-show hosts and celebrities (Kathy Griffin, Michael Moore, Jane Fonda), Stewart didn’t reach for the easy commentary (Sarah Palin = Death). Yet his awkward broadcast exposed the limits of sarcasm in dealing with tragedy, as opposed to dealing with banal Washington business-as-usual.
