Babs In “Gypsy”: Wet Dream? Really?
Michael Musto says that the possibility of Barbra Streisand starring in a new movie musical version of “Gypsy” is “a gay man’s wet dream.” Or a gay man’s — any sensible person’s — nightmare. Streisand is too old to play the 1959 show’s early scenes, when her character, Mama Rose, is a youngish woman. And what masochist in Hollywood would want the job of directing Barbra? Amazingly, she hasn’t headlined a movie since “The Mirror Has Two Faces,” which she also directed and of which Janet Maslin, in the Times, memorably wrote of Babs, “The camera does love her, even with a gun to its head.” If this “Gypsy” ever gets made, that gun will be more like a bazooka.
