Rex’s Oscar Trivia Of The Day

LW’s movie-awards fanatic, Rex Okpodu, should be home watching all the potential Oscar-nommed movies. Instead, he’s in beautiful Brazil for the holiday. He did, however, take a brief break from the beach to file this item: Most Oscar websites seem to be predicting that “The Fighter” will win for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo – best supporting actor and actress. When was the last time one film won these two awards? This happens very rarely – only 6 times in 82 years. Answers after the jump.

> 1986 – Hannah and Her Sisters – Michael Caine and Diane Wiest
>
> 1971 – The Last Picture Show – Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman.
>
> 1961 – West Side Story – George Chakiris and Rita Moreno.
>
> 1957 – Sayonara – Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki.
>
> 1953 – From Here to Eternity – Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed.
>
> 1951 – A Streetcar Named Desire – Karl Marlden and Kim Hunter.
>
By the way, A Streetcar Named Desire and Network are the only 2 films with three acting Oscar wins.
>
> Street Car Named Desire – Best Actress (Vivian Leigh), Best Supporting Actor (Karl Marlden) and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter).
>
> Network – Best Actor (Peter Finch), Best Actress (Faye Dunaway) and Best Supporting Actress (Beatrice Straight)
>
> Finally, if this year The King’s Speech loses best picture and director and manages to win actor, supporting actor and (by default of the 2 noms expected from The Fighter cancelling each other out), Mrs. Burton (aka Helena Bonham-Carter) wins the supporting actress category, “King” will make history.
