Lennon’s Last Days: I Was There

Rollingstone1120Cover_webForgive me if I have an especially healthy, even ghoulish interest in the final days of John Lennon. You see, I was on that block of Manhattan — just down from the Dakota, where Lennon lived — when the fatal shooting happened thirty years ago. I rushed down toward the commotion — I was young, and I had not yet learned that when you hear gunshots you run the other direction — and witnessed the first moments of what is now history. Lennon’s last interview has just been published in Rolling Stone. In it, he complains that his critics were just interested in “dead heroes.”
