Steve Martin Can’t Get No Respect
“The Y, which is supposedly a champion of the arts, has behaved very crassly and is reinforcing the most philistine aspects of a culture that values celebrity and award shows over art.†That’s Steve Martin, commenting on the unruly crowd at his public appearance this week, when Martin wouldn’t provide the usual show-biz patter. Martin’s point is a good one, but, really, did he really think they showed up to hear him talk about Gericault — or, as it happened, about “The Jerk”?
