“Phillip Morris”: The Premiere
Last night, I attended the New York premiere of “I Love You Phillip Morris,” a movie that’s been awaiting American distribution since The Silent Era. (Distribution begins December 3.) Starring Jim Carrey as a con man and Ewan MacGregor as his lover, the film exudes amiability but is hard to embrace fully. Unlike DiCaprio’s chicanery in “Catch Me If You Can,” Carrey’s con games do not afford the pleasure of showing in detail how they’re set up and seen through, and his character’s prison ins and outs can be a bit confusing. The love story between Carrey and MacGregor is quite charming, though the decor of their 1990s home in Texas might cause you — or anyone else who wants to forget the gaudy style of some gays in the 1990s — to flinch. I wish I liked this movie more; on the other hand, when was the last time you saw a star-studded gay love story in which the characters didn’t die?
