Long List For Oscar Docus Announced
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 15 documentaries that will be eligible for an Oscar nomination next year. Biggest surprise omissions: two well-regarded films about the Holocaust. Most welcome omission: “Joan Rivers: “A Piece of Work.” James Wolcott called that flick ‘a disagreeable piece of gristle.’ Further: ‘One long crab of ingratitude from the backseat of a car hauling her from one gig to another as she bears up under the burden of the blows life has dealt her and the mortal pull of gravity, made all the heavier by the godawful jewelry she has on.’ I guess he didn’t like it.
