“Free Man”: Mess Or Masterpiece?
“A Free Man of Color,” by John Guare, opened last night at Lincoln Center Theatre. Directed by George C. Wolfe, the production has gotten a range of reviews: The New York Times called it, unflatteringly, “a gaudy swashbuckle through history”; the Wall Street Journal said that the play “just might be a masterpiece.” And New York magazine says it’s both spectacular and messy. Because I write a Backstage Blog for the show, I’m not acting in this instance as critic. All I’ll say is that if you love theatre — and the theatrical — you’d be a fool not to see the play and form your own opinions.
