Oh, Those Irreverent Royals!
I approve of the new poster for “The King’s Speech,” an eagerly awaited movie to be released in the U.S. on December 1. The cheekiness of asserting that God is less powerful than the man who played the Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush) must have the old Marquis shrieking gleefully from amidst the fires of hell. Meanwhile, the implication that God is rather ineffectual reminds me of one of the current queen’s lines from Alan Bennett‘s “A Question of Attribution.” When the subject of the after-life arises, HM tells Anthony Blunt, “I expect that Heaven is likely to be something of a comedown for me.”
