Klein & Stein At “Fiddler On Roof”
I can’t end my postings this morning without saying something about Joseph Stein, who has died at the age of 98. Stein was best known as the book writer for “Fiddler on the Roof,” and the screenplay writer for the smashing film made of that musical. (One of the rare completely successful transfers of a show to the big screen.) But Stein also participated actively in the theatre life of New York for many years after “Fiddler.” (He’s shown above with Calvin Klein at the Broadway revival of that show in 2004.) His presence at an opening was always treasured. I only met him once, and he couldn’t have been nicer. Rest comfortably, Joe!
