Welcome To Stockholm Pride!
I’m in Stockholm this week for the city’s annual Pride celebration. I’ll begin my in-depth postings about the events tomorrow, but I can’t tell you how impressive it was this morning to arrive at the airport and step into a taxi bearing the decal “Stockholm Pride” on its window. A similar wide-ranging public spirit was continued in other public transportation: buses and subway trains are flying the rainbow flag, and on the street I’ve already overheard two heterosexual couples talking with anticipation about the events. The whole city is Pride-ful, an astonishing contrast to even the gayest cities in the U.S., where Pride month seems more of a gay-exclusive, niche affair. Not here: in Stockholm, gay and straight integrate more seamlessly.
