“Almost All The Beats Were Bisexual”
“Almost all of the Beats were bisexual and one another’s lovers,” writes Edmund White in a commentary on a show of the photos of Allen Ginsberg — Jack Kerouac is pictured left — at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. White continues: “I remember asking a straight friend why he had had sex with Ginsberg and he said, opening his hands palm-up as if it were self-evident, “Dude, he was Allen Ginsberg.†It certainly wasn’t because Ginsberg was a hottie on the order of James Franco, who plays him in the new movie “Howl.” Speaking of Franco, his charmingly wacky artistic spirit harkens back to the Beats: if he hasn’t slept with both men and women I’ll eat my shorts.
