Happy Birthday, Jem And Scout!
This Sunday, July 11, marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird.” And guess what: the novel is soaring back to the top of the best-seller lists around the English-speaking world. Miss Lee, known to intimates as Nelle, has even given an interview to mark the occasion, although it was to a sleazy British tabloid. (Miss Lee, who is one of my heroes, has occasional lapses in taste: she also accepted a medal from George W. Bush.)
