Pilobolus Co-Founder Dies At 60
Jonathan Wolken (pictured), a Dartmouth philosophy major whose desire not to live in the corporate world led him to co-found the dance troupe Pilobolus in 1971 with Moses Pendleton, has died at the age of 60. Like many theatregoers, I found Pilobolus’s brand of pretzel-flexible movement fresh and startling when I first encountered it as an undergraduate. Over the years, however, it came to seem more and more contrived — effect for effect’s sake. I transferred my allegiance to Momix, the troupe that Pendleton broke away and founded.
