My Final Tony Award Predictions
As with any major awards show, by the time we’ve arrived at the big night I’m kinda over the whole thing. I’m especially depressed about this Sunday’s Tonys because the removal of journalists from the voting list (I’m one who got booted!) means that undeserving movie stars like Denzel Washington and Catherine Bitch-Jones may rule the evening. Following are my predictions for the Tonys (nominees here). Sunday night’s noteworthy winners will be “Fences,” “La Cage aux Folles,” “Red,” and “Memphis.”
Best Play: “Red”
Best Musical: “Memphis” (with “Fela!” as a strong possibility)
Best Revival of a Play: “Fences”
Best Revival of a Musical: “La Cage aux Folles”
Leading Actor/Play: Alfred Molina, “Red” (but Denzel Washington in “Fences” will probably win)
Leading Actress/Play: Viola Davis, “Fences”
Leading Actor/Musical: Douglas Hodge, “La Cage aux Folles”
Leading Actress/Musical: Montego Glover, “Memphis” (Catherine Zeta-Jones could also win for “A Little Night Music”)
Featured Actor/Play: Stephen McKinley Henderson, “Fences”
Featured Actress/Play: Jan Maxwell, “Lend Me A Tenor”
Featured Actor/Musical: Levi Kreis, “Million Dollar Quartet”
Featured Actress/Musical: Katie Finneran, “Promises, Promises”
Best Direction/Play: Michael Grandage, “Red” (Kenny Leon, “Fences,” is also a possibility)
Best Direction/Musical: Terry Johnson, “La Cage aux Folles”
