New Yorker’s List: How Good?

Next week’s New Yorker, out on Monday, will contain its list of the 20 best writers under the age of 40. It’s a defensible list, with admirable variety. Unfortunately, all the scribes, it appears, write in English, and many of the greatest young authors in the world, of course, write in other languages. The Colombian Juan Gabriel Vasquez and the Portuguese Goncalo M. Tavares, for example, are in my view every bit as good — and probably stronger — than anyone on The New Yorker’s list.
