Louise Bourgeois, an inimitable modern artist, has died at 98. I interviewed her years ago; she kept me waiting, and when I remarked upon this fact she replied: “You’re lucky I’m talking to you at all!” Far from being off-putting, this riposte was charming. In spite of all her years in New York, she remained unbendingly French.
