What Desks Said About Tonys
The Drama Desk awards — sort of the Golden Globes to Tonys’ Oscars — were distributed last night. What did they tell us about the run-up to June 13’s Tonys? “Red” looks unstoppable for Best Play; “Memphis” is becoming the frontrunner for Best Musical; Catherine Zeta-Jones’ main competition for Best Actress/Musical looks to be not Sherie Rene Scott (alas) but Montego Glover; Scarlett Johansson is going to lose to Jan Maxwell; Viola Davis (pictured) is a sure thing; the two closest categories may be Best Revival of a Play (between “Fences” and “A View from the Bridge”) and Best Featured Actor/Musical.
