“On The Road” Is Happening
The long-gestating adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, which has been in the works since at least 1980, when Francis Ford Coppola bought the film rights, is finally, officially happening. The Motorcycle Diaries’ Walter Salles will direct, with Garrett Hedlund, soon to be of Tron, playing Neal Cassady stand-in Dean Moriarty, Control’s Sam Riley playing Sal Paradise, the Kerouac part, and Kristen Stewart (pictured) playing Mary Lou, Moriarty’s on-again-off-again wife (something she actually cares about for a change). What are the chances the film will include the scene where these three people get naked in a car? Where is James Franco — the modern actor with the most Kerouac-y vibe? Oh, right: he’s starring in a movie of the period that’s already been made: “Howl.”
