Why Did Megan Leave The Show?

mullally200So what’s the real reason that Megan Mullally, best known as Karen Walker on “Will and Grace,” abruptly departed the Broadway revival of Terrence McNally’s play, “Lips Together, Teeth Apart,” in the middle of its rehearsal period? Some say that Megan had had enough of director Joe Mantello‘s must-get-his-way behavior; the New York Times report bears an anonymous source saying that Mullally’s discontent was with someone else connected to the production. (Perhaps, according to this report, cast member Patton Oswalt.) I don’t know the answer. I do know that the Roundabout, which is presenting the show, is a little misguided to keep to the show’s opening date, April 29, when they don’t even have a new star for the part. The theatre wants to get in under the Tony awards deadline, but this comedy, which I enjoyed mightily in its original production, was and is never going to be a serious Tony contender. Why not wait and get it right?
